Frequently Asked Questions

"Are the drugs and devices used in Mesotherapy approved by FDA?"

Under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938, FDA reviews and approves prescription and nonprescription drugs and medical devices. There are strict FDA rules that dictate what active ingredients can and cannot be used in drugs and what medical devices can be used in treating patients in the United States.

Under longstanding FDA policy, a physician may use a drug or a medical device in Mesotherapy (or any other treatment or procedure) only if the drug or device has been approved by FDA and is either being used for the specific purpose for which FDA approved it or for some other medical purpose. If a drug or device has not been approved by FDA for any use in the United States, it is a crime for any physician to use it for any type of treatment or procedure whatever. This is true whether the drug or device is made in the United States or is imported from abroad. It is also true even if the drug or device is approved for use abroad. Unless it is approved by FDA for some use in the United States, it is completely illegal for any physician to use it here.

If you are considering Mesotherapy, you should make sure that your physician fully informs you about the names of the drugs and medical devices that are being used, and you should require a written statement that they have been approved by FDA for some use in the United States. If your doctor does not provide this information, you should consider whether the doctor can be trusted and whether the doctor should be reported to appropriate medical and regulatory authorities responsible for policing both the medical profession and the drugs and medical devices that the profession uses.

"Who can provide Mesotherapy?"

Not all Mesotherapists are alike. Mesotherapy should be performed by an MD or DO who has ACCME Approved Continuing Medical Education Credits (CME's). A nurse or pysician's assistant should not administer Mesotherapy without the MD or DO being present. Patients should seek a Mesotherapist trained by the Bissoon Institute of Mesotherapy. Beware of false or misleading claims, and steer clear of unaccredited practitioners. If you are considering Mesotherapy, ask your physician for a list of medications to be used, and verify that the person has received proper training.
